The Church and the Pope: Part 3- Correcting the pope

Correcting the Pope – Saints and Popes

Pope Adrian VI († 1523)

“If by the Roman Church you mean its head or pontiff, it is beyond question that he can err even in matters touching the faith. He does this when he teaches heresy by his own judgment or decretal. In truth, many Roman pontiffs were heretics. The last of them was Pope John XXII († 1334).”

St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica II, II, q. 33, a   It must be observed, however, that if the faith were endangered, a subject ought to rebuke his prelate even publicly.”

St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica II, II, q. 33, a. 4, Sed Contra“Augustine says in his Rule: ‘Show mercy not only to yourselves, but also to him who, being in the higher position among you, is therefore in greater danger.’ But fraternal correction is a work of mercy. Therefore even prelates ought to be corrected.”

Pope St. Gregory the Great  “It is better that scandals arise than the truth be suppressed.”

“But, when necessity compels, not those only who are invested with power of rule are bound to safeguard the integrity of faith, but, as St. Thomas maintains: ‘Each one is under obligation to show forth his faith, either to instruct and encourage others of the faithful, or to repel the attacks of unbelievers.’”

Strategies Employed to correct Pope Francis so far, include:

  • Dubia: Centuries old tradition of correcting a pope issued by  Cardinals Burke, Caffara, Meisner and Brandmüller. (see image below) (2 of these cardinals are now deceased. The questions were ignored by Pope Francis.)

  • A Filial Correction was issued to the pope by 62 signatories  in a 25 page letter. This measure had not been employed since the 14th century. See articles below. Also NY Times, 23 Sept. 2017 & Rorate Caeli.

  • Correction by three bishops against Pope Francis’ interpretation of Amoris Laetitia … saying such a reading is causing “rampant confusion,” is “alien” to the Catholic faith, and will spread “a plague of divorce” in the Church. Bishop Athanasius Schneider, auxiliary of Astana, Kazakhstan, Archbishop Tomash Peta, Metropolitan of Astana, and Archbishop Jan Pawel Lenga of Karaganda, Kazakhstan issued a Profession of the immutable truths about sacramental marriage on December 31 as a “service of charity in truth” to the Church of today and to the Pope. (Jan 2, LifeSiteNews)  (This original group of 3 now stands at 7 Bishops as in Jan. 2018)

  • Online Petition from LifeSite News, and sponsored by the Lepanto Institute to: Support the filial correction of Pope Francis for ‘propagating heresies’ was signed by over 7500 people as of Sept 2017.
