A Saint for our time: St Oliver Plunkett

St Oliver Plunkett

July 11th is the feastday of this great saint. it is not in the Traditional Mass hand Missal, but you will find it in the Supplement for Australia and New Zealand. This year the date was on Sunday – 7th Sunday after Pentecost. The priest’s homily really hit home . You will understand after reading his life story. (Irish Saints are often celebrated in Australia, I guess because the Faith in Australia was handed down to us by convict priests, who endured much hardship in doing so. The Catholic Faith was forbidden.)

Basically, St Oliver Plunkett was born in Ireland in 1625. At the time, Ireland was under intense persecution. There had been no bishop for decades; priests were generally uneducated and had to say Mass in houses and wherever they could. He always wanted to be a priest, but at the time, it was too dangerous to travel. Up to 12,000 people had been killed in the uprisings and atrocities  in Ulster at this time.

Finally, he and a group of future seminarians, set off for Rome in 1647. To do this, he had to go to England, where Catholics were also hunted. It,  it was strictly forbidden for young men to travel to the continent to enter seminaries.(At the moment, we are in another lock-down, much worse than ever before – Churches are closed – there is only on-line streaming. Some of us are aware of at least 3 parishes which are ignoring the rules and Mass is continuing. Police are everywhere checking, and we are forbidden to go beyond out local area and less than 10 km from home. The Saint is an example to us.))

The perilous journey included being followed by 2 warships. After praying for deliverance, a storm came and fixed that problem. After that they were abducted by robbers and left penniless. Eventually he got to Rome, but he was a pauper student. The Irish College in Rome could not accept him straight away. He was a gifted student and eventually became Professor of Theology and later Professor of Apologetics or Controversies. After many years, when the problems in Ireland had eased a bit after Cromwell’s death, Rome appointed new bishops. He was chosen to be the Bishop of Armagh. Pope Clement IX stated that Oliver was the ideal candidate and he so declared his appointment.

His journey entailed going to London, where he passed himself off as a tourist. He also stayed for some time incognito in the Royal Palace under the protection of the confessor to Queen Catherine, who was a Catholic.But this was also dangerous, because there were agents looking for him. He remained there, unnoticed right under their noses.

He ended up staying for the entire winter because of the harsh weather conditions. During this time he met a priest who was previously an army officer. Oliver, subsequently adopted the disguise as Captain Browne, with wig, sword and pistols.

He finally arrived in Ireland in 1670. The viceroy was on the lookout for him, so he continued in disguise. The laws on the statute books were strongly anti-Catholic and it very often depended on the Viceroy or a local official or dignitary as to how strictly they were enforced. However, when a new Viceroy was installed, things became a little easier. In time, he became well liked and respected even by Protestant clergy. He managed to build Catholic schools,  and travelled around doing Confirmations (as there had not been a bishop for over 40 years).

St. Oliver was a diplomat, who astutely steered clear of politics, but he kept on good terms with many leading citizens, including the President of Ulster, who allowed him the use of his courtyard in Armagh for confirmation ceremonies and another who allowed him a public church with bells on estates, which were exempt from the jurisdiction of the royal ministers.

He worked hard in transforming the bad habits of many of the clergy, who were mostly uneducated, and had not had any authority in place to guide them. He ordained 100 priests, who knew how perilous it was to be a priest at the time.

In the end, it was rogue clergy who betrayed him. He was sent to England for trial (as in Ireland, the courts held him in good standing and many times allowed him to get off). In England, he was denied a defence counsel, but he disputed the right of the court to try him in England and he also drew attention to the criminal past of the witnesses.

He pleaded not guilty;  he asked for more time to produce his defence witnesses, but this was denied him. He was sentenced to hang, and to be drawn and quartered.

His reply to the sentence was ‘Deo Gratias”

Oliver’s trial, conviction and martyrdom in July 1681, was such an outrageous episode that it greatly discredited those who brought it about and the credibility of the plot and of its advocates collapsed completely thereafter. Lord Shaftesbury the principal promoter of the plot was arrested and imprisoned on the following day and another conpirator was arrested soon afterwards on a charge of perjury.

There is much in St Oliver Plunkett’e life that we should take note of. The persecution of all  Catholics; the law which was anti-Catholic; priests who said Masses everywhere except in a church; the faithful who supported him; his disguises enabling him to do God’s work without being noticed; his hard work ethic; his dedication to study, Charity and  Good Works; his many sufferings and his joy. Despite all, there were many blessings from God and he was grateful to God. The people and priests who were able to visit him, hear his confession, and the way in which he received the things he needed to say Mass whilst locked away for months before his trial; his acceptance of the verdict; his forgiveness of his enemies…. He is indeed a saint for our times.

In a swelling hall of collective ill-fame,

Readied by abuse cases too long ignored.

salvation needs. But the book names

only Anglophone countries, and aims

at them special analyses

of some of the faults and fallacies

that they harbour. The cases I take

will show exactly what’s at stake.

Tame: Britain and America’s case;

not Australasia’s. Cut to the chase.

Though their beauty and ample supplies

of  natural resources win a prize,

flak Australia and New Zealand cop

for their Church leaders. Not much chop;

huge disappointment. What have they done

about their “pagan culture”? The fun

and games will, I bet you can bet.,start

to kick in if there’s no change of heart.

I’ve had dealings with Australia. Big,

big enough for a big enough rig

of Church establishments to provide

alternatives that override

an Establishment that makes it hard

for crisis fight-backs by the old guard.

But the Remnant still somehow thrives,

and the Holy Spirit still contrives

to spur Novus-Ordo believers

into faith-drought thirst-relievers.

New Zealand? Doesn’t rate very high

on Australian agendas. Why

relates to her fewness-of-people

that question-marks the bravest steeple,

even when quakes don’t strike hard. The might

of Modernism’s in its hold: tight

New-Zealand-wise, where, its neighbour knows,

the shortage of alternatives shows.

The Underground is rightly not banned –

when it’s too tellingly undermanned.

Not that the rest of the world’s left out

of the prophetic picture. Great clout

marks items detailed in four broad fields

that prove the power that evil wields:

personages of wicked intent;

states of soul where we need to repent;

harm from nature or willful plan;

laws against God by the rule of man:

scripture, dogma,  prophets all combined

in one blessing to the open mind.

in every information reach

of life but most pulpits. Servants paid

by us seem mortally afraid

to do their duty – though atoned-for

by media pundits at full bore

free from the censor, if not from censure.

Yet indifference (like dementia)

leaves Satan-targeted world-wide hordes

lodged not with the Lord  but suspect lords

now that “full” is not the faith pews get:

pulpits pulp it to a mixed-bag hash.

But Underground  lies a sounder stash

(though overall Remnant’s the buzz word).

The Dove Descending’s still to be heard.

Why’s “Strait-is-the-Gate” so seldom trod?

Catacomb-shelter God’s forced to give.

 

EPILOGUE:  GETTING A REAL CASSANDRA CASE

Of course, the new earth needs survivors

to people it, though the contrivers

of the new world order do not plan

on any kind of heaven for Man.

They are bent on hell for us, both now

and later. Me, spared? I can’t see how.

There’s a Tribulation to get through.

I might. But then I mightn’t want to.

There’s no preempting the bitter end

but through death. Death be that good a friend?

After our CPG meeting yesterday (Thursday, 28th April), we were discussing the election in Ireland next week and Crusade prayer 32 (to prevent abortion being accepted in Ireland):

While speaking about the election next week, an (Irish) group member was fiddling with one of the Books of Truth on the table, and inadvertently (Jesus present in our prayer group, guiding us) opened up on the message of 17 Feb 2012: “Introduce abortion in Ireland and you sever a link to my heart”.

We all felt a deep sorrow, to think that this beautiful Catholic country, which has been so loved by God, could possibly sever this link. Our faith (in this country) was also brought to us by the Irish. We need to increase our prayer intentions for this in the coming week!

Remnant Army – please Pray, pray, pray –  Crusade Prayer (32) so that this does not happen. We were given this prayer to pray for a reason. It is for all to pray – not just the  people of Ireland.

Please add it to your core prayers at this time to pray every day. The message is below:

“Mother of Salvation: Introduce abortion in Ireland and you sever the link to my Heart”.   (17 February, 2012)

I am your beloved Mother, Queen of the Angels, the Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Conception.

O how I weep today, as Ireland, the country most dedicated to me, their beloved Mother, falls prey to the evil one.

Great darkness has descended over this nation. So many have lost their faith, just as so many have turned their hearts away from my beloved Son, Jesus Christ.

My children in Ireland have allowed the evil one to turn their hearts to stone.

Those who love my Son are in pain as they witness the secularism, which has taken control over this, once holy, country.

Attempts are now being made to introduce abortion and if this were to happen, it will deeply offend my Precious Son.

My children, should you introduce abortion in Ireland, you will sever the link that has brought you so close to my Heart.

So many people in Ireland now insult my Son through the disrespect they show Him. I also am no longer tolerated and my name is demeaned.

Children of Ireland, chosen as special souls to impart the Word of my Father, throughout the world, you must listen to me.

Pray, pray, pray that these plans to introduce abortion laws do not take place.

Should this happen, Ireland will lose much favour in my Father’s Kingdom.

The sin of abortion is the most grievous in the Eyes of my Father. It is the worst kind of genocide.

You must fight this evil, children. You must do it now or the last Divine link, which needs to be strengthened, will, instead, be weakened.

You must rise, children, and reclaim your Catholic and Christian Faiths, for they are being stolen from you.

Do not allow those in power to sneer at you when you proclaim the Holy Word of God.

This spirit of darkness has now, not only covered your country, but the Holy Shrines at which I am supposed to be revered.

I weep in sorrow as I see my beloved Ireland fall by the wayside.

Yet there is hope, children, but you must now join, in force, to protect your Faith.

Soon you will be forced to abandon, not only your Catholic Faith, but your Christian Faith.

Reclaim your country from socialism and secular dictatorships.

They will plead for the right of citizens, but will deny the very rights they claim to protect, including the right to pray.

They will force you to accept, in law, the right to murder children not yet born.

Remember, each soul was lovingly created by God, the Almighty Father.

Any man who chooses abortion or assists in the wicked act of abortion commits mortal sin.

“O Mother of Salvation, pray for your children in Ireland to prevent the wicked act of abortion from being inflicted upon us. Protect this holy nation from sinking deeper into despair, from the darkness, which covers our country.

Rid us of the evil one, who wants to destroy your children yet to be born. Pray that those leaders will have the courage to listen to those who love your Son, so that they will follow the Teachings of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.”

Go now, my child, and tell my children in Ireland that they must be strong. They must stand up for what is right.

They must never be afraid to proclaim the Truth, the Holy Word of God, no matter how difficult this may be.

All the readings, chosen at random after a prayer to the Holy Spirit,are listed below, together with a short summary of each. We will post each message in a separate post each day for your private reflection. The Bible reading and reflection on it will be posted in full below.

The Readings today:

1. Douay Rheims Bible – Wisdom 7:7-14

This reading from the Bible was about “wisdom”- that we should call upon God for Wisdom. It is an “infinite treasure (…) which they that use, become the friends of God, being commended for the gift of discipline”.

2. “Hear My Call and prepare for the pouring out of My Holy Spirit.(1 May, 2012)

This reading, about the Holy Spirit tells us of the Warning, but Pentecost will also be here in a few weeks. We are told that the Warning, through the power of the hOly Spirit, will  help people to wake up to the truth, and that they  will begin to  question everything. They will  see through the mask of the deceit being imposed by Masonic controlled groups who are already taking everything away from us. . The Holy Spirit gives us all the armour we need. This reading seems intended to follow on from the Bible Reading about “wisdom” which we had just read previously.

3. “The more you are hated, My disciples, the more you are loved by God. (10 September, 2013)

In this reading, we are told that we will be tormented more and every effort will be made by Church falsified theology to entrap us, but we are also reassured that “the more hated we are, the more loved we are by God. We must also pray harder for priests, who will be under much pressure.

4. “Democracy to disappear – Priests will be martyred.” (3/3/2011)

This reading is speaking to us as disciples – that even though there will be much conversion after the Warning, we still need to prepare souls for it; also that priests will suffer and loyal sacred servants will have to defend their Faith; but also that after it, Jesus’ army will rise. In this reading, Jesus warns us about wars, suffering, famine. He tells us that money will be scarce and that we must pray! He reassures us that our prayers will be answered

Urgent Prayer Needed for Australia

We were all shocked at the news from Ireland- that this could happen so suddenly!

Within days, our Leader of the opposition, Bill Shorten, announced that he would introduce a Private Members’ Bill into Parliament regarding same-sex marriage rights.

We sprung into action and organised a Holy Hour of prayer to pray that this does not happen.

If you are not Australian, don’t relax – your country could be next.

The only answer is prayer and action.

Please pray an avalanche of prayer for Australia till at least the Tuesday evening announcement.

Beg God to change all the minds of these MPs so that they do not allow this bill for homosexual marriage, to get past the lower house.

Offer whatever you can to uphold the Holy Will of God and His Most Holy Word. Pray the prayer below throughout the day and the Holy Rosary and Chaplet of Mercy. Fast, pray, hold prayer vigils. Offer God whatever you are able.

God loves these souls (practising homosexuality) and does not want them to be bound or condoned in their sin. Their souls matter just as much as our own.

This is spiritual warfare so please assist your fellow soldiers in the fight for Christianity and for souls, with your finest spiritual weapons! You know what they are.

O God the Almighty Father, in the Name of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, have Mercy on all your children in Australia and New Zealand.

Forgive us our rejection of Your Holy Word.

Forgive us for the sin of indifference.

Rid us of our pagan culture and cover us with the Graces to inspire hope, faith and charity, amongst our brothers and sisters.

We beg you for the Gift of Discernment
and ask that you grant all of us the blessings we need
to ensure that only the Truth of Your Holy Word can be heard

so that all souls are granted the keys to eternal life.
